Can I Charge Apple Watch with Fast Charger?

You might be hearing and reading a lot of rumors and news about the upcoming Apple Watch 7. And one of the rumors is its new features which is support for fast charging. 

It is said that this feature results in 33 percent faster charging time when compared to the Apple Watch 6. However, Apple said that the fast charging requires a new USB-C cable.  So how about the other Apple Watch models? Can you charge your Apple Watch with a fast charger? 

According to Apple, Apple Watch uses fast charging for the first 80 percent of battery capacity. The expected charging times are around 1.5 hours to 80 percent and two hours from zero to 100 percent. 

Your Apple Watch can be charged using the Magnetic Charging Cable in conjunction with a USB port. You can also use an Apple 5W USB Power Adapter or an Apple iPad USB Power Adapter. You can charge your wearable whenever you want. There is no need to let the battery discharge to any particular level first. And there is no benefit to be gained by doing it. 


How to Maximize Battery Life on Apple Watch? 

According to Apple, it is most convenient to charge your Apple Watch nightly, overnight. Keep in mind that the watch cannot be overcharged. The battery of your Apple Watch will not suffer any harm from regular charging. You will notice that charging will automatically stop when the battery of your device is fully charged. It will start again if and when required due to ongoing battery usage. 

In addition to that, if you want to maximize the battery life of your Apple Watch, you should follow Apple's safety and handling instructions. Take note that it is normal that you can't turn off your watch while it is on the charger and connected to power. So no need to be alarmed. Likewise, it is normal for your watch, power adapter and charging cable to become warm when connected to power. 


How to Charge Your Apple Watch


With your Apple Watch, you can receive notifications, track your activity, engage in phone calls, among others. With those functions and features, you can expect that the battery life of the device is similar to its iOS companion. This means you need to charge your smartwatch daily. 

If the battery of your wearable is low, you will see the low battery icon on the screen. To charge your Apple Watch, just follow these steps

  1. First, make sure that you handle your Apple Watch and accessories safely. You should also always take off your watch before charging it. 
  1. Next, plug the Apple Magnetic Charging Cable or Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock into a USB power adapter.
  1. Then, plug the adapter into a power outlet. You can also choose to plug the charging cable into a USB port. 
  1. Make sure that you position the back of your Apple Watch on the charger. You will notice that the charger's magnets align your wearable. Then, you will see the battery charging icon on your watch face. 
  1. After that, you only need to give your Apple Watch time to charge. While charging, the device goes into Nightstand mode. 

Apple Watch Charging Tips

There are several places where you can check your Apple Watch's battery charge level. You can swipe up on the watch face to open the Control Center. Then you will see the battery percentage. If you want to check it using your iPhone, you can add a battery widget to show any connected Apple Watch.  If you want to improve the lifespan of your battery, here are some Apple Watch charging tips:

  • Turn on Airplane Mode. Just like your iPhone, the Apple Watch fills its battery faster if you turn on Airplane Mode during the loading process. By doing that, it will kill all connectivity. This will allow your device to focus on charging without burning unnecessary power juice. 
  • Charge your wearable every night. If you own a 42mm Apple Watch, you will find that its battery could last more than a day. The thing is, not all Apple Watch is like that. If you want to keep on using your device, you might want to charge your wearable every night no matter how high or low its battery level.
  • Charging location. When you charge your device during the day, make sure that you don't place it in a sun exposed position. You see, your Apple Watch can dangerously overheat if it remains for two hours in the sun. And if you're using a leather band, the strap can be damaged by direct sunlight exposure. 

You can avoid overheating by picking a well-ventilated place for charging your device. 

  • Fast Charge. Li-Ion batteries, like the one in your Apple Watch, charge in two stages. They use a Fast Charge mode to reach 80 percent and for the remaining 20 percent, Tickle Charge stuffs electrical current to extend lifespan. So in a situation where you need to charge your Apple Watch during the day, you can do partial charge. Then, bring back the Apple Watch on your wrist as soon as possible. 
  • Use Power Reserve. Apple recommends that you use Power Reserve to preserve the battery life of your Apple Watch. While in Power Reserve mode, you can still see the time on your wearable. Just press the side button to show the current time. 

Also keep in mind that in Power Reserve, your Apple Watch and iPhone won't communicate. You can't access other watch features as well. Your Apple Watch will alert you and ask you if you want to use Power Reserve when your battery drops to 10 percent. And when the battery gets too low, your device automatically enters Power Reserve. 

To turn on Power Reserve, first open the Control Center by swiping up on the watch face. Then, tap the battery percentage and drag the Power Reserve slider.
